Gunmen kill 8 in fresh Benue attack

At least, eight people have been killed in a fresh attack against several villages in two local government areas of Benue State at the early hours of Thursday.

Daily Trust gathered that six people were killed in Mbakuur council ward of Logo local government area while the other two which brought the number of the victims to eight fell to the bullets of the gunmen suspected to be herders at neighbouring Mbaya council ward in Buruku LGA.

This is the second attack on Logo people in less than five days as 10 dead bodies had already been recovered from the area in the Sunday mayhem unleashed on the rural inhabitants.

A similar attack by the same suspects left five persons dead at Buruku villages in March, this year, sequel to which Governor Samuel Ortom at that time directed herders to quit the community.

The Logo council security secretary, Tor JIji Aluur, confirmed to our correspondent in Makurdi that the fresh attack on the Mbakuur ward was carried out by the suspected herders about 3:00am on Thursday.

He said six dead bodies had been recovered at the time of this report.

Also, paramount ruler of Ichongo in Logo council, Chief Peter Iorhuna, corroborated the reports on the fresh attack on his domain.

On his part, the State Coordinator of Myetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association (MACBAN), Garus Gololo, said he was aware of the fresh trouble in the aforementioned areas.

He told our reporter that he was on his way to meet with members of his association over the matter at the time of sending this report just as he appealed to villagers to be calm.

The Police however, was yet to confirm the incident at press time as both the State Commissioner, Bashir Makama and the Command spokesman, Moses Joel Yamu were out of the state on official assignment to Abuja.
