Borno IDP camp records 18 new cases of cholera, death toll hits 21

Eighteen new cases of cholera outbreak have been recorded at the farm centre IDP camp in Maiduguri, Borno state.

This is as death toll from from Muna IDP camp rose to 21, less than 48 hours after officials of Doctors without Borders confirmed the death of 8 persons killed following the outbreak.

The rise in number of death was confirmed on Tuesday by officials of the Borno state ministry of health, who were on the field to curb the spread of the disease in the camp and surrounding communities.

“As of 4 September, 21 deaths have been reported. The total number of suspected cholera cases is now 375 in Maiduguri”, an official said.

Most of the suspected cases and deaths are in Muna Garage, a camp for displaced people on the outskirts of Maiduguri, while other victims are from neighbouring districts, health officials revealed.

The government and NGOs are working to contain the outbreak which has spread to the town of Dikwa, about 60 kilometres away from Maiduguri where over 2 million victims of Boko Haram insurgency are taking refuge with over 500,000 still living in government designated camps.
