A fan was shot in the head at point-blank range as he lay helpless on the floor after violence broke out at an amateur football match. The murdered man slumped to the ground after being shot as he tried to stone players celebrating their win over his side in a confrontation which erupted minutes after the final whistle.
The gunman - alongside another man also carrying a gun - then walked up to him as he lay injured in the dirt and fired off another three shots from close range in front of several young children.
The execution happened after a Sunday league match at a rundown pitch in Fresnillo, the second largest city in the north central Mexican state of Zacatecas
The killer pair walked off unchallenged as the crowds dispersed with the weapons still in their hands.
The victim, a 40-year-old named only as Gerardo N, died as he was rushed to hospital.
One of the boys who witnessed the execution skipped away after the murder seemingly oblivious to the horror of what has just unfolded.
Footage of the incident, which took place just before 2pm local time, showed angry fans from the losing side attacking players from the winning team as they partied in the centre circle after their victory.
One man could be seen kicking one of the players in the stomach as he walked towards teammates jumping up and down with their arms round each other - before the supporter who ended up being shot ran after another to throw a stone at him.
Several shots rang out as the winning side's fans tried to stop him in the chaos - and seconds later he fell to the ground after being hit by a bullet by one of two men dressed in jeans and black T-shirts who surprised him from behind.
Witnesses started running away as the gunman finished off the job he'd started - before he walked away as if nothing had happened.
Authorities were today still hunting the killer and his accomplice.
Police recovered three 9mm spent cartridges and three .45 cartridges from the scene, indicating both men involved in the violent crime had fired their guns.
Zacatecas police chief Marco Vargas said the two suspects were among a group of people who left in two vehicles.
He added: 'There were children at the scene but fortunately they weren't injured. The gunmen went solely for the person who was shot and no-one else was hurt.'
Zacatecas is one of Mexico's most violent states. Local reports said firearms were used in 315 of the 415 homicides that were reported in the month of September alone.
Last November a football referee in Tulancingo in the Mexican state of Hidalgo died after being head-butted by a player he red-carded.
The player fled the scene in a pick-up truck amid chaotic scenes as the victim was receiving medical attention.
