The Garki General Hospital, Abuja, has dismissed reports that it denied corps member, Nkechi Igwetu,
treatment after being shot by a police officer.
IB had on Thursday reported that Igwetu had been reportedly shot dead by a trigger-happy police officer, identified as Benjamin Peters.
Igwetu, who was billed to pass out of the compulsory one-year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), died on Wednesday morning.
However, reacting in a statement the hospital’s Medical Director, Essen Nyomudim, said the corps member was brought in a critical condition, adding that the accident and emergency team tried their best to save her life.
The statement reads: “The attention of Garki Hospital Abuja has been drawn to certain defamatory rumors peddled on the social media on the unfortunate incident that happened to a promising young lady, Angela Igwetu who was cut short at the prime of her life.
“Garki Hospital deeply sympathizes with the family of the deceased, the NYSC and Nigeria as a whole on the loss of Miss Igwetu.
“Garki Hospital wishes to state as follows: The purported complicity of Garki Hospital Abuja in denying Miss Igwele treatment and allowing her to bleed to death while asking for a police report is false and malicious.
“Garki Hospital Abuja does not demand for the police report before attending to Trauma Patients at her Accident and Emergency department.
“Garki Hospital does not demand payment before stabilizing Trauma Patients. It is a Tradition that we do not compromise.
“To set the records straight, Miss Igwetu was brought to our hospital at about 3.40am on 4th July, 2018 in a very precarious condition. The doctors on duty at the Accident and Emergency unit, including the consultant surgeon on call, battled to provide necessary care to save her life including blood transfusions and limited surgery. This was done without payment. Unfortunately, she died despite all efforts to save her life.
“The purported reports on the mainstream and social media were all pushed out without any recourse to verification from Garki Hospital.
“Garki Hospital DEMANDS immediate rebuttal of all such reports from all mainstream and social media WITHIN 48 HOURS as well as published APOLOGY to Garki Hospital for misinforming the public and publishing MALICIOUS GOSSIP.
“Failure to publish the required rebuttals and apology would compel Garki Hospital to take legal actions against such media houses. We also encourage the media to always take a step further by confirming the information they are fed with before broadcasting it to the general public.”
